Proposed Alcohol Control Area Amendments
Overview
The Local Government Act 2002 gives Marlborough District Council (Council) the power to control the consumption and possession of alcohol in public places by development of an Alcohol Control Bylaw.
Marlborough has the Alcohol Control Bylaw 2024 (Bylaw). Under this Bylaw Council may specify, by resolution, the public places to which the prohibitions and controls in that Bylaw will apply, with the aim of minimising disorderly behaviour and criminal offending.
Current alcohol control areas (ACAs) have been in place since 2018. Police, as enforcers of the Bylaw, have recently approached Council to consider additions and amendments to the ACAs to give them a better ability to minimise alcohol related harm and mitigate disorderly behaviour and criminal offending associated with alcohol in Marlborough. They have noticed an increase in issues in the areas they have requested be amended or added. Council is therefore proposing amendments and additions to the ACAs.
